Board of Elections votes to move polling places

In response to ongoing surveys, discussions and state and federal requirements to provide every citizen unfettered access to the polls, the Meade County Board of Elections took steps in their Feb. 13 meeting to ensure that accessibility to every voter.

County Clerk Katrina Fitzgerald advised that the Kentucky Disabilities Commission had reviewed the surveys of Meade County’s polling places and found accessibility issues with each one. A solution, she said, would be to move all precinct locations to the public schools. Board member Rosemarie Folden then moved to relocate all precincts to the public schools (which are already accessible) for the primary and general elections. All members of the board were in favor of the motion.

All registered voters will receive a postcard advising of their new voting locations (precincts will not change). A preliminary list of schools serving as polling places is as follows: Muldraugh, Ekron, Flaherty, Meade County High School, Payneville and Battletown.

In other business, the board approved the contingency plan in case of emergency. They also signed certificates of nomination for all unopposed candidates or those who will not be on the ballot in May.

The next meeting is March 13 at 10 a.m.
