Chamber members and manners at monthly luncheon

Each year, members of the Meade County Area Chamber of Commerce receive a special treat when the 6th-graders from Battletown and Payneville elementary schools join them for the annual Manners Luncheon. The idea for this annual event began with a conversation 11 years ago between Pat Garcia, family resource coordinator for Payneville and Battletown, and Jennifer Porter-Benham, Meade County Extension agent for family and consumer sciences. Some kids, said Garcia, haven’t had the opportunity to get dressed up and go out to eat, and may not know how to conduct themselves in such situations. To that end, Garcia and Porter-Benham set out to teach some manners and give the kids a chance to have some fun in the process. Click Here For Full Story

These changes may bring from 500 to 1,000 new families to Meade County. On a motion by Councilmember Bradley Johnston, seconded by Councilmember Carol Nelson, all were in favor of the $3,000 contribution. Councilmember Bruce Fackler requested and received assurances there would be accountability of how the funds are used.

Jailer questioned about county audit

The audit report of the Meade County Fiscal Court from the fiscal year June 1, 2003, to June 30, 2004, was accepted at the February business meeting after questions from Magistrate Theresa Padgett about its only recommendation – a requirement for improved accounting procedures for the jail canteen fund. Magistrate Padgett read from the report that the previous year’s audit had included the same recommendation with no response from the jailer. She stated that this lack of response could result in $250 per day fines for the jail, plus daily fines for Fiscal Court. She questioned why this had continued to be a problem at the jail.
