During its regular monthly meeting Feb. 13, the Brandenburg City Council unanimously agreed to help support the Meade County BRAC Action Group with a contribution of $3,000 to be used during the upcoming BRAC Road Show. Mayor Ronnie Joyner has attended several meetings with this group seeking to market Meade County to those who will be relocating to Fort Knox during the next few years as part of the Base Realignment and Closing Commission (BRAC) changes. These changes may bring from 500 to 1,000 new families to Meade County. On a motion by Councilmember Bradley Johnston, seconded by Councilmember Carol Nelson, all were in favor of the $3,000 contribution. Councilmember Bruce Fackler requested and received assurances there would be accountability of how the funds are used.
In his police department report, Police Chief Jason Amburgey introduced Officer Stratford Young, the newest addition to the department. Arrests in January totaled 46; 27 felony and five misdemeanor charges were filed following the arrest of the individuals responsible for the church and school break-ins as well as the burglary of Alec Stone’s law office. There were nine accidents in January with only one of those being an injury accident. Citizens on Patrol logged 202 volunteer hours, including midnight shifts, and 2,085 miles in January.
Public works director T.J. Hughes advised water loss was up to 33 percent due to several leaks. Work on River Cliff has slowed down due to weather and mechanical problems. A crew was moved from River Cliff to the site of the new elementary school. He is addressing several complaints about potholes.
In other business, Fackler asked about progress on a building inspector. Joyner advised the planning and zoning commission needs to come up with a policy on buildings inspection, and Melvin Atcher has indicated he will serve as the building inspector. Joyner advised the council that Michael Faith is working on moving the building on his property and noted he needs to come up with a site development plan for the property. The tire place on High Street is out of compliance with regard to the number of tires and vehicles. Joyner stated he is addressing the issue.
A business license application from Richard’s Auto Mart & Storage Building was tabled pending a review of the water/sewer use ordinance on a motion by Johnston, seconded by Fackler. A business license for Granny’s Thrift Store was unanimously approved, as was a solicitor’s license for TAP Enterprises.
