Meade County Fire Protection District treasurer Bruno Ilario recommended trustee Jim Anthony as his replacement at the monthly board meeting Tuesday night, March 20. Anthony accepted and was voted in unanimously.

Ilario reported a total of $146,306.43 in checking and savings together. He again expressed his concern about budget expenditures that had reduced savings and prevented debt reduction. After discussion the board set a $400 spending limit without board approval except in case of an operational emergency.

Ilario’s request for a $25 monthly increase to the bookkeeper for added work to clarify monthly MCFPD reports was approved.

Ilario’s second request that the $50,000 certificate of deposit be designated only for the building fund was tabled by Chairman Mike Curl for further consideration after trustee Martin Boesmer explained that there had been three savings accounts originally – one for the building fund, one for the equipment fund, and one for FEMA grants.

Fire Chief Larry Naser recommended using the $15,000 FEMA grant to install the Air Technology system for exhaust removal for the stations. He said it provided “the best bang for a buck” and can be easily moved to a new fire station. The district’s share of the cost is $5,000. Fire shelters were ordered through another grant project. The chief’s general expenses account for Feb. 21 to March 20 totaled $34,461.45.

Naser reported that an average of ten members responded to thirty runs since Feb. 21. Bill Anderson, home on a two-week leave from Iraq, attended the meeting and will volunteer while here. Firefighter Theresa Day was accepted back after health concerns were resolved. Danielle Hicks completed probation as a junior firefighter. Bruce Wardrip completed firefighter reorientation, while Kyle Mattingly began a 90-day reorientation. Allen Kinder, Ken Livers and David Greer began a 180-day new firefighter probation period, and Logan Noyes began the same probation period as a junior firefighter. Naser mentioned plans for a meeting to assess and address any parental concerns about junior firefighters.

Naser presented the firehouse committee’s list of criteria needed in the bay area. It included four drive-through double stacked 82 foot bays, insulated 14X14 doors with 3 feet between doors and 6 feet at the ends, properly sloped and adequate floor drains, interior and exterior electrical outlets between doors, individual overhead fill stations, water faucet at each end of bay, air and electric drops to trucks, exhaust and air-vent system, utility room for house air and tools, separate cascade room for compressor and bottles, Corayvac heating, automatic wet pipe sprinkled building, smoke detectors, hose drying tower and storage, cleanup unisex bathroom, washer/dryer room with water heater and elevator, if multi-leveled.

Following a closed session to discuss three personnel issues and a paid chief position, Chairman Curl called for a special meeting on March 29, at 7 p.m. to come to a decision. He cited the need for all members of the board to be present before such an important decision would be made.
