On Nov. 8, 2005, there was the very real possibility that Fort Knox would close. On Nov. 9, 2005, that picture changed dramatically. Not only will Fort Knox not close, but an influx of military and civilian personnel and their families will be relocating to the area in the near future. While those changes are anticipated to be positive for Meade County in the long run, we will face short-term challenges. Not the least of those challenges is how to accommodate added numbers of children in Meade County schools.

Ekron Commission to rebid projects
Commissioner Terry Trent chaired the routine monthly meeting of the Ekron City Commission on April 4 in the absence of Mayor Gwynne Ison. The primary item of discussion was the bids for two projects in the city. The only bid for three speed bumps to slow down speeders on Ekron streets came from James Hall Concrete in the amount of $1,266. That business also presented a written bid for a tree removal on Chism Way amounting to $900. A $750 verbal bid from Townsend Tree Removal Company was listed on the agenda. Members of the commission discussed the fact that none of the bids had enough details and asked Commissioner Don Ison to list specs and advertise the jobs again.

Apply for CRP re-enrollments and extensions by April 14
WASHINGTON – USDA’s Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) today reminded Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) participants with contracts expiring on Sept. 30, 2007, that they have until April 14, 2006, to apply for re-enrollment and extension.

Perhaps I shouldn’t have been as surprised as I was, but I recently found an entire neighborhood chock full of violations. The abundance of violations came to light due to a phone call from “Mr. X,” who reported too many horses and too many goats on too little acreage and in a subdivision where it appears there shouldn’t be any livestock in the first place. And the violation ball simply rolled from there when I took a ride through Mr. X’s neighborhood and discovered there are several more violations that have received complaints.

Court of Appeals affirms district court’s view on Muldraugh case
