Agri Fuels signs land option agreement
 With the price of gasoline pushing hard on $3 a gallon, crude oil going for over $70 a barrel and a federal emphasis on reducing America’s dependence on foreign oil, a nationwide movement has begun to increase the production of ethanol, a renewable fuel source.

MCFPD Board approves chief position
After listening to Meade County Fire Protection District board members discuss their inability to fund the district’s three-year plan and hire a full-time fire chief, Meade County firefighters gathered at the April meeting agreed that the leadership of a full-time fire chief was more important than a new fire station at this point. The board voted to begin the process for hiring a full-time chief in the next fiscal year if the firefighters would be realistic about cutting back their plans. No specifics regarding salary were discussed.

Water District supplies over 3,400 customers
General Manager Joe Bartley asserted at the Meade County Water District April meeting that despite the fact that Meade County was one of the last Kentucky counties to develop a water district, it is growing quickly with a total of 3,402 customers currently being served. The March financial report showed that revenue on water sales, hook-ups, service charges, etc. was up to $141,910.48. Operating and maintenance costs for the month were $97,164.78. The deposit account used to pay refunds on customer deposits contains $48,364.51. The contingency account used for in-house projects and large item purchases has a balance of $80,048.56. The reserve account which must maintain a balance of at least $31,200 required by Rural Development holds $33,167.67. Current debt service stands at $114.205.71.

Brandenburg City Council votes to rehab water well
The April 10 meeting of the Brandenburg City Council opened with a recognition of visitors. Tom and Billie Baird and William Bassett, representing the Meade County Senior Citizens Center, provided a report on the city funds spent and made their request to be included in the next fiscal year’s budget. Most of the planned work has been completed, according to Bassett, except for the back parking lot. An auction, dinner and gospel sing are planned for June 4 to raise money for the center. “We try every day to earn money without having to go the city or the county,” said Bassett, who added they continue to work toward making the center more livable and sociable for the senior citizens of Meade County. “Whatever you give us will be used wisely,” said Bassett.

According to Kentucky Revised Statutes 65.003, every governing body of each city, county, etc., shall adopt by ordinance a code of ethics which applies to all elected and appointed officials as well as city or county employees. Elected officials to which a code of ethics applies includes the mayor, county judge/executive, members of the governing body (magistrates and councilmen), county clerk, county attorney, sheriff, jailer, coroner, surveyor, and constable. Members of school boards are not included in this list.

School board reviews wellness report, Title IX efforts
The Meade County Board of Education held a special called meeting April 13. Customary approval items included accounts payable, payroll and construction fund payments for work at the new elementary school and for survey work for the auditorium/addition at Meade County High School. The design development drawing for the 757-seat high school auditorium was approved, and approval was also granted to advertise for bids for the project.

Meade PZ approves rezonings for daycare, lawn mower shop
At its April 20 regular meeting, the Meade County Planning and Zoning Commission voted to take an issue off the table that had been tabled in March. Andy and Melinda Givans had requested a rezoning from R-1 (residential) to B-1 (neighborhood business) for the purpose of putting a daycare center on the property. Neighbors expressed concern that if the property were rezoned, a subsequent owner could place another type of business on the property. County attorney Darren Sipes had recommended placing a deed restriction on the property indicating the only business allowed on the property would be a daycare. One letter in opposition expressed concern regarding sight and sound barriers. Mr. Givans stated their intention to install privacy fences between their property and that of their neighbors.
