Yes, Meade Countian, your vote does count

In preparation for the 2006 Primary Election, we took a look back at the last countywide election in 2002. Numbers told a real story in that election and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that every vote does count. The race for Meade County judge executive was decided by fewer than 100 votes, as were the races in three magisterial districts. Every vote does count.

Also telling were the total number of voters who cast ballots compared to the number of votes cast in each race. Over 400 voters chose not to vote for judge executive, and nearly 2,000 voters didn’t bother to make their choice for sheriff known.

And the song remains the same in terms of voter turnout: pitiful. Fewer than 50 percent of Meade County voters cast their votes during the general election. And in the primary elections, when so many key choices are made, the voter turnout was a measly 38.9 percent.

See the chart at right for a breakdown of the 2002 general election.

This is a crucial election year for the future of Meade County, and every vote does count. Let your voice be heard. Vote on May 16.
