A “Celebration of Hope” tea and reception for Kentucky breast cancer survivors was held by first lady Glenna Fletcher at the Governor’s Mansion in Frankfort on May 1. The event was held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in a huge, white tent on the grounds of the mansion. Mrs. Fletcher said it was a kick-off for Derby week.
Attending from Meade County were Meade County Breast Cancer Coalition members Jettie Burnett, Fay Mattingly and Doris Wells. While in Frankfort, the ladies also enjoyed a visit to the State Capital building.
The celebration included a Derby hat show, with hats modeled by a number of breast cancer survivors. Young ballerinas danced in mini-performances at various locations on the grounds. Vocal entertainment was provided by Kenny Bishop. Bishop works at the Governor’s Mansion, and his wife Shirley Bishop is a breast cancer survivor. Event speakers were Shirley Bishop, Carin Addams, Ann Marchal, Judy Hayes, and Bonnie Seibert – all breast cancer survivors.
There were about 40 door prizes given out, and everyone in attendance received a teacup with a handkerchief that had embroidered on it the pink breast cancer ribbon symbol. Avon also had free gifts for everyone.
The event was well attended by approximately 700 breast cancer survivors from all over the commonwealth of Kentucky.
“It was basically a celebration that we’re all still here,” said Doris Wells.
