Fiscal Court to pay $747,000+ for county employee health insurance

On May 22, four members of the Fiscal Court met with Judge Executive Bill Haynes in a special called meeting to handle a four- item agenda. The first item was to approve the county employees’ health insurance coverage for the next fiscal year. Insurance representative Jeff Greer recommended the Humana PPO as the best coverage for the money, even though it did represent a 14 percent increase over the current fiscal year policy.

Magistrate Kent Allen asked if the added cost was based on the loss ratio from previous claims. Greer explained that it did have an effect on the price as there had been several serious illnesses that were not in line with routine claims.

Magistrate Harold Davidson questioned the possibility of saving the court money on incentives for healthy living, such as nonsmokers paying less than smokers. Magistrate Theresa Padgett and Davidson were put on a committee to work with Greer. The court approved payment for additional claims that had arisen since the regular monthly meeting. They also approved payment from the general fund for legal fees involved in the county attorney’s collection of delinquent road service districts funds. The county attorney was directed to reimburse any money collected to the general fund.

Flaherty Fire Department received a $3,690 grant from the Kentucky Search and Rescue Program to buy rescue pagers. The check was wired directly to the county fund, so the first reading of the emergency budget amendment to process this check through the proper channels was done by secretary Shirley Fackler.
