Brandenburg High School Class of 2005-2006 graduates despite the storm

Severe thunderstorm warnings and power outages couldn’t prevent the graduates of Brandenburg High School from taking their hard-earned walk May 25 or their friends and family from coming out in droves to witness the occasion. There was little pomp and less-than-favorable circumstance, but the important part of the graduation ceremony – the awarding of diplomas – was achieved after some logistical maneuvering and a change of venue.

The Meade County High School Class of 2006 graduated May 26. With stormy skies and inches of rain falling the night before, there was much concern about where the graduation ceremony would take place.

Meade County Farmers’ Market opens June

The Meade County Farmers’ Market returns this weekend for the sixth year in a row. Once again, the market will be set up in the parking lot of Glad Tidings Christian Church on Bypass Road in Brandenburg, directly across the street from McDonald’s and Kroger and next door to Brandenburg Pharmacy Care.


Board of Education awards construction contract on new primary school

The Meade County Board of Education met May 25 to consider bids for the new primary school to be built adjacent to David T. Wilson Elementary.


Fiscal Court to pay $747,000+ for county employee health insurance

On May 22, four members of the Fiscal Court met with Judge Executive Bill Haynes in a special called meeting to handle a four- item agenda. The first item was to approve the county employees’ health insurance coverage for the next fiscal year. Insurance representative Jeff Greer recommended the Humana PPO as the best coverage for the money, even though it did represent a 14 percent increase over the current fiscal year policy.


Conservation District Board displeased with auditing fees

The Meade County Conservation District held its monthly meeting on May 22. Present were chairman John Bruington and board members Jim Scott, Jack King, Henry Pike, and Nathan Beavin. Also present were Calvin Bohannon, B.J. Stith, Liz Hawkins, Charlotte Lawson, and Don Martin.

Only 37 percent of Meade County’s registered voters – 6,213 voters out of a possible 15,851 registered Democrats and Republicans – turned out to vote in the Meade County Primary Election on May 16.
