Property owners debate horse issue on Old Ekron Road

When Ernie and Trish Givans built their home on Jena Court in Brandenburg in 2000, they weren’t at all concerned about the horses living behind them. There were only three horses there at the time, stated the Givans, and they were perfectly content being their neighbors.

Street names and addresses the hot topic at Brandenburg City Council

The Brandenburg City Council held a special called meeting June 8 to discuss the street name and address changes proposed by the 911 Center to bring all areas into compliance in preparation for Phase II of the E-911 system.

Battletown’s Joe “Mac” Hamilton has riverboat named in his honor

May 31 in New Orleans was a big day for Joe Mac Hamilton and his family as well as for all of Meade County. It’s just not every day someone from our county has a boat named after him.

MCFPD board approves paid chief plans

At a special called June 5 meeting, Meade County Fire Protection District board chairman Mike (not Matt as reported in the last article) Curl led the trustees through the final steps toward obtaining a full-time paid fire chief to head the district. Treasurer-elect Jim Anthony explained how the financial committee including Bruno Ilario and Martin Boesmer worked to bring the chief’s total annual pay package to approximately $55,000.

State answers Messenger reporter’s KRS questions pertaining to horse acreage

In order to clarify the intent of Kentucky Revised Statutes (KRS) as the statutes pertain to livestock, and because obtaining answers to questions proved difficult, this reporter contacted state Rep. Gerry Lynn for assistance. As a result, Laura Shelton Goins, communications and media relations director for House Republican leadership in Frankfort, researched the topic and provided this reporter with the requested information. The purpose of the information request is a result of the recent controversy in Meade County concerning keeping horses on less than the legally-prescribed five acres.

Who’s minding the store?
– And other points to ponder

I enjoy writing about animals not so much because I’m a big animal lover but because animal issues are one of the few issues that seem to stir people’s passion. “Animal people” who may normally shy away from other forms of controversy become so passionate when it comes to animals that they will actually stand up and let their voices be heard – quite often with a roar. I’m really hoping this is one of those times.

Ekron City Commissioners improve Pee Wee Reese Park

Mayor Gwynne Ison described the ongoing work by Commissioner Terry Trent and his family to keep the trash picked up, the flowers blooming and the grass mowed in the Pee Wee Reese Park near their home in Ekron. She acknowledged that he was currently being paid $200 to mow for the city but asked him to accept “due recompense” for the extra mowing in the park or allow someone else to be paid to mow it. Since D & W Lawn Service had submitted the only bid for park mowing, Mayor Ison entertained a motion by the commission to offer Trent the same $60 rate per mowing. The commission approved the motion and Trent accepted.

Brandenburg City Council pledges support to Bluegrass River Heritage Festival

With Brandenburg Mayor Ronnie Joyner unable to attend the regular June meeting of the Brandenburg City Council, a variety of topics were covered in a special called meeting June 8. Among those were the first readings of ordinances regarding annexation, annual budgets and water rates, a request for support of the annual Bluegrass River Heritage Festival and a lengthy discussion of the proposed street and address changes in preparation for the E-911 system (see related story regarding the last item).

Brandenburg United Methodist Church welcomes Chester Chancel Choir

Under the direction of Kentucky native Joshua Wortham, the Chancel Choir of Chester United Methodist Church (Chester, Va.) will be performing at Brandenburg United Methodist Church as part of their summer tour. The choir will sing a mixture of hymn arrangements, spirituals, contemporary favorites, classical selections and gospel hits.

Erica Redmon joins Extension staff for the summer

Erica Redmon has joined the Meade County Extension Service as a summer intern working with the 4-H/Youth Development program. A 2002 graduate of Meade County High School, Erica is now a senior at Berea College, majoring in early childhood development. She has already gotten busy, planning a foods day camp and Cloverbud day program for the young ones. She was preparing to attend the teen conference, accompanying Jena McCallister, the week of June 12, and after that will be 4-H Camp. One more trip will be the 5th District summer wrap-up for 4-H teens who wish to attend that function.

Meade County RECC announces annual meeting

Meade County RECC will hold its 69th annual membership meeting on Monday, June 26, at the Breckinridge County High School in Harned. Registration for members will begin at 6:30 p.m. EDT or 5:30 p.m. CDT.
