Federal grant awarded to Riverport Authority $95,000 designated for engineering services for planned development
WASHINGTON, D.C – U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis (KY-02) announced June 24 that the Meade County Riverport Authority in Brandenburg has been awarded a $95,000 Rural Business Enterprise Grant. The grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will be used to implement necessary engineering services for the development of a riverport in Meade County.

Confederate General John Hunt Morgan’s Great Raid will be reenacted here during Civil War Days, which will be held Saturday and Sunday, July 8 and 9, at Riverfront Park.

UC researchers develop and test prevention program for childhood obesity
The waistlines of children continue to grow, along with the concern about the problem. Two University of Cincinnati researchers are recruiting a school, parents and children in fighting obesity as they test a new prevention program in Meade County. After spending spring conducting focus groups with children and their parents, the 12-week program, geared toward 129 fifth-graders, will be launched at an elementary school in Brandenburg when school begins this fall.

Meade County Fiscal Court holds emergency meeting to adopt budget
A special called emergency meeting of the Fiscal Court was held June 29 to adopt the 2006-2007 budget. Prior to the budget ordinance reading, Judge Executive Bill Haynes read the following statement on the advise of the County Attorney:

Ag Field Day Farm Tour to be held July 6
The Meade County Conservation District Board held its monthly meeting on June 26. Present were board members John Bruington, Joe Barger, Jim Scott, Jack King, Henry Pike, and Nathan Beavin. Also in attendance were employees Calvin Bohannon, B.J. Stith, Liz Hawkins, and Charlotte Lawson.

Ekron ends fiscal year in good financial shape
Ekron treasurer Larry Berry declared that every area of the budget was in the black this year despite total expenses of $50,761.43. Acting chairman Terry Trent congratulated him on a good job with all of the extra improvements in the city.

Last week I was catching up on the news and read that the constitutional amendment to ban desecrations of our American flag died in Senate, just one vote short of passing. Simply stated, this means anyone who wishes to make a derogatory statement about the United States by burning the American flag is protected under the First Amendment to our Constitution. It’s freedom of speech.
