Conservation District holds monthly meeting
By KAREN KENNEDY
Messenger Staff
The Meade County Conservation District held its monthly meeting on Aug. 28. In attendance were Chairman John Bruington and Commissioners Jim Scott, Fred L. Sipes, Joe Barger, Henry Pike, Nathan Beavin, and Jack King, as well as employees Charlotte Lawson, Liz Hawkins, B.J. Stith, and Calvin Bohannon.
Charlotte Lawson reported Meade County Conservation District has received the “Silver Plow” award from the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts.
Joe Barger made a motion, seconded by Nathan Beavin, to give $50 to the auxiliary scholarship fund. All voted in favor.
Discussed once again this month was the hiring of another employee through the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s 50/50 cost-share program. The board is continuing to pursue the possibility of hiring such an employee.
Division of Conservation District field supervisor Kelly Shouse was recently here to conduct the annual audit and found all to be in good order. Henry Pike made a motion to accept the audit, which was seconded by Fred L. Sipes and approved unanimously by the commission.
Because they have Internet access to state records, Charlotte Lawson and Liz Hawkins have learned they must now go through a background check. Lawson stated the cost for the mandatory background check is $90 per person, but she has not yet been told who is responsible for the cost.
Jack King made a motion, seconded by Henry Pike, to pay the travel expenses for Lawson and Hawkins to travel to Shepherdsville for the NRCS background checks.
Calvin Bohannon briefly spoke about the possibility of applying for more grants.
In her dead animal pickup report, Liz Hawkins reported four dead animals had been picked up in the past month. One customer has paid his bill, with three other customer bills still unpaid. Nine customers are now on the “no service” list due to nonpayment.
