Ins and outs of ethanol in Meade County

One customer – the Meade County Riverport Authority – was already on board before the 551-acre parcel adjacent to Arch Chemicals was purchased late last year for the purpose of developing an industrial park. Another customer – AgriFuels, LLC – was already expressing interest. Now, approximately eight months later, plans are in the works for AgriFuels to purchase a portion of this land for the purpose of building a 55 million-gallon ethanol plant. Ready or not?

The month of September has been designated as National Preparedness Month. It is a nationwide effort sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, and schools. Over the next few weeks, we will have a series of articles to help you evaluate your current state of disaster readiness and then show you how to improve upon it.

Could Emergency Medical Dispatch be in our future?

In communities that have Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), people who call 911 for an ambulance are greeted by certified emergency medical dispatchers (EMDs) on the other end of the line. These dispatchers not only dispatch an ambulance to the scene of the medical emergency but are also trained to provide treatment over the phone until help arrives.

Conservation District holds monthly meeting

The Meade County Conservation District held its monthly meeting on Aug. 28. In attendance were Chairman John Bruington and Commissioners Jim Scott, Fred L. Sipes, Joe Barger, Henry Pike, Nathan Beavin, and Jack King, as well as employees Charlotte Lawson, Liz Hawkins, B.J. Stith, and Calvin Bohannon.

Resolution of drug case results in bonus for Meade County

U.S. Attorney General David L. Huber met with a group of federal, state and local officers at Doe Run Inn Aug. 31 to express his gratitude for a job well done. “This is probably the best thing the U.S. attorney gets to do,” said Huber of the purpose of the gathering, which was to distribute money forfeited as part of a drug case. “The wonderful thing about this program is that we can sometimes give money, vehicles, assets, back to the local agencies who assisted us or brought cases to our attention,” said Huber, who added that approximately 20 percent of the U.S. attorney general’s cases are brought to them by local law enforcement agencies.
