Meade County Ethics Commission meets; first time in almost three years
By JOE REDMON
Messenger Staff
New board chair Joann Fitzgibbon chaired a working session of the Meade County Ethics Commission Oct. 8. Members present included Tim Gossett, Joe Bewley, Gloria Brady and Harold Fackler. Members Tara Powers and Lamar Jones were not present. County Attorney Darren Sipes was on hand to lend legal advice. The meeting constituted the first official meeting of the KRS-directed Ethics Commission in almost three years.
The working session served as an organizing meeting and the commission formally asked the county attorney for assistance in formulating its policies and procedures. Darren Sipes agreed to work to assist the commission any way he can. He pointed out to the members present they are a quasi-legal entity and should operate according to basic due process rules of procedure. All present concurred.
The commission decided to approach three old ethics complaints by addressing the complainants and inquiring whether they would want to continue to pursue that particular complaint. The commission plans to move at a deliberate pace when considering the merits of those or any complaints.
The commission agreed to host its next formal public meeting on Oct. 23. The commission will continue to organize and prepare itself for ongoing operations.
