Rabies discovered in Guston

By Jerry Brackett Jr., R.S.
Environmental Health Director
Lincoln Trail District Health Department

On Oct. 20, the Environmental Health office of the Meade County Health Department received information that a cat tested positive for rabies. This was a stray cat picked up in the Guston area of Meade County along Hwy 79 on Oct. 11. After displaying symptoms of rabies, the animal was euthanized and sent to the state lab in Frankfort for testing.

The cat was a male with short hair and grey and white in color. Anyone who may have come in contact with a stray cat matching this description in the Guston area should contact the Meade County Health Department or a physician.

Rabies is a disease which if left untreated is fatal in both humans and animals. It is naturally carried by wildlife in the area. Pet owners should insure that their animals’ rabies vaccines are up-to-date.

For additional information, contact the Meade County Health Department’s Environmental Health office at (270) 422-5919.
