109 Board eliminates bookkeeper position

Following a lengthy discussion about the audit provided by Chilton & Medley, PLC, the 109 Board continued its regular monthly meeting Oct. 16.


Rabies discovered in Guston

On Oct. 20, the Environmental Health office of the Meade County Health Department received information that a cat tested positive for rabies. This was a stray cat picked up in the Guston area of Meade County along Hwy 79 on Oct. 11. After displaying symptoms of rabies, the animal was euthanized and sent to the state lab in Frankfort for testing.


109 Board receives audit

The 109 Board regular monthly meeting Oct. 16 opened with a review of the audit conducted by Chilton & Medley, PLC, for the years ended June 30, 2006, and June 30, 2005. Board members received a draft of the audit, which will be finalized pending receipt of several more items.


Meade County receives Crusade grant

On Oct. 17, Rebecca Jackson, chair of the WHAS Crusade for Children, visited the Meade County Board of Education. Jackson was welcomed to Meade County by representatives of the Meade County Firefighters and Chiefs Association. The firefighters are instrumental each year in raising money for the Crusade for Children, and the funds raised in Meade County are returned to Meade County in the form of an annual grant. This is one charity which can truly say, “Money raised here stays here.”


Observing National Fire Safety Month in Meade County

During October (National Fire Safety Month), all Meade County fire departments and districts make a special effort to deliver fire prevention messages to all who will listen. This year’s fire prevention theme is “Watch what you heat; avoid cooking fires.”


Board of Elections begins in office absentee voting

The Meade County Board of Elections held a special called meeting Oct. 16 in place of its regular monthly meeting. Present were Rosemarie Folden, Jo Ann Willett, Bruce Williams and Katrina Fitzgerald.


Projects and payments approved by Fiscal Court

The Meade County Fiscal Court held a special called meeting Oct. 18 for the purpose of addressing five agenda items. Judge Executive William Haynes and Magistrates Don Callecod, Herbie Chism, Harold Davidson and Jamie Staples were in attendance.

Riverport Authority receives Corps permit

FRANKFORT – The Department of the Army Corps of Engineers issued a permit for the Meade County Riverport Authority to construct a barge transloading facility on the left bank of the Ohio River at mile marker 645 near Brandenburg. The port facility will consist of 50 acres.

Meade PZ approves two requests, one with reservations

With court still in session Oct. 19, the Meade County Planning and Zoning meeting was moved from the courtroom to the law library at the Meade County Courthouse. In the absence of both chair Cheryl Gibson and vice chair Allen Flaherty, Mark Garverich took the lead.

Senior Citizens fundraiser nets over $2,500

Thanks in large part to the efforts of nutrition director Sondra Hinton and staff member Martha Beasley, an Oct. 15 fundraiser for the Meade County Senior Citizens was a huge success. Hinton made the rounds to area businesses requesting their support of the nutrition programs offered through the center, and Beasley gave her own time to pick up and prepare food for the event.
