On Oct. 17, Rebecca Jackson, chair of the WHAS Crusade for Children, visited the Meade County Board of Education. Jackson was welcomed to Meade County by representatives of the Meade County Firefighters and Chiefs Association. The firefighters are instrumental each year in raising money for the Crusade for Children, and the funds raised in Meade County are returned to Meade County in the form of an annual grant. This is one charity which can truly say, “Money raised here stays here.”
Also welcoming Jackson was a group of special needs students from Meade County High School, students who will benefit greatly from the grant Jackson was presenting that day. Jackson took the time to greet each student individually and shake each hand before getting down to business.
She presented a check in the amount of $75,000 for a grant submitted earlier this year. The grant will pay for salaries of an occupational therapist, a physical therapist and two teacher assistants. It will also be used to purchase a career exploration kit to be utilized by students with disabilities. Nancy Mitcham, who oversees special education programs for Meade County Schools, submitted the grant request and was happy to receive the check from Jackson.
The check presentation was filmed for a 15-second spot to air on WHAS-11 in late fall or early winter. The camera panned across each smiling face as each had his or her moment in the spotlight.
