During October (National Fire Safety Month), all Meade County fire departments and districts make a special effort to deliver fire prevention messages to all who will listen. This year’s fire prevention theme is “Watch what you heat; avoid cooking fires.”
In 2005, four persons lost their lives in Meade County as a result of fire or injuries sustained in fires. Armed with information concerning cooking fires, checking smoke detectors and forming exit plans for the home, firefighers make a concerted effort to reduce the number of fire deaths and injuries.
Much of this education is directed toward school children. On Oct. 19, members of the Meade County Fire Protection District visited David T. Wilson Elementary School to teach preschool students about fire safety.
With the change from daylight savings time to standard time Oct. 29, all homeowners are urged to change the batteries in their smoke detectors. This simple procedure can mean the difference in your life and death. For more information on fire prevention and home safety ideas, contact your local fire department.
