Lady Wave volleyball’s impressive season ends in region semifinal

The Meade County volleyball team’s (27-7) season came to a close Oct. 18 as the Lady Waves fell in the semifinals of the 3rd Region Tournament to host Owensboro Catholic (25-12, 25-14).
“Experience hurt us in the match,” said Lady Wave head coach Chad Butler. “A team like Owensboro Catholic has been there and done that before. They got on top of us, and our girls didn’t know how to get back to our style of play.”
Junior Morgan Filburn had nine digs, one ace, and one kill in the match, while sophomore Shelby Chism added eight assists, six digs, and three kills.
Junior Megan McGehee smacked four kills, while fellow junior Melinda Hurt pitched in three digs. Junior Lydia Curran chipped in two kills and two digs, while junior Cassandra Bennett and sophomore Claire Cannady had two digs each.
McGehee and Chism were both named members of the All-Tournament team.
Despite the loss, the Lady Waves’ 27 wins this season is the most in school history and the team’s success was somewhat of a surprise, according to Butler.
“This team really performed a year ahead of schedule,” said Butler. “I wasn’t expecting this kind of success, but a lot of girls improved from last year.”
However, with all players returning next year, Butler feels that the team will have to work hard to take the Lady Wave volleyball program to the next level.
“We still haven’t had that breakthrough win in region that we have to have,” said Butler. “We’re beefing up the schedule next year to try to prepare for the kind of competition we will see in region. Our team made lots of improvement over the summer this year, and I hope to see the girls work just as hard this summer to get better for next season.”
