MCSW&R is back to daytime pick-up
America Recycles Day slated for Nov. 15

By MARK E. GOSSETT
Coordinator
Meade County Solid Waste & Recycle

Let me take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Solid Waste coordinator at Meade County Solid Waste and Recycle. I’ve been here since Sept. 1 and so far, I like tackling the many challenges that this job has to offer. Thanks for the support from the community during these first couple of months.

As many of you already know, on Aug. 14, MCSW&R began picking up solid waste during the night instead of during the day as we had in the past. Our board of directors made the decision to try nights because they saw many potential benefits from night pick-up with the main one being safety for all.

There were several factors that caused night pick-up not to work out causing the board to vote to return to day pick-up starting Oct. 10. If you are a Meade County Solid Waste customer, your scheduled solid waste pick-up is the same day as it was before we went on nights. Please set out your bags or cans by 7 a.m. Remember, trash should be bagged and placed in 32-gallon cans. We are unable to remove loose trash that is placed in cans larger than 32 gallons.

In the past, we have allowed property owners to sign a waiver giving MCSW&R permission to send a solid waste bill to the occupant of the property if the occupant of the property was someone other than the owner. This waiver stated that the property owner was still totally responsible in the event the renter/contract-for-deed buyer didn’t pay the bill.

In order to comply with the solid waste ordinance that’s been on the books since 1994, the board discontinued the practice of signing waivers. All MCSW&R bills are now being sent directly to property owners only. MCSW&R will no longer be able to allow property owners to sign waivers to have solid waste bills sent to their renters or to those individuals who are buying from them via an unrecorded contract for deed.

We have installed a new phone system. Please be patient while we work the kinks out of this automated system. When you call in, you will hear several options. Please dial the extension of the department that you wish to speak to.

America Recycles Day is slated for Nov. 15. You may participate simply by stepping up your recycling efforts over the next year in some way, large or small. Posters reminding you of this important day will be displayed at various locations around the county.
