Meade County Messenger hosts debate; candidates make their cases

Meade County Messenger publisher Rena Singleton thanked the candidates and panelists for their participation and expressed her appreciation of the citizens who had come out to hear from the candidates regarding the issues.
Messenger publisher Rena Singleton hosted a political candidate debate Oct 25, at the Farm Bureau building in Brandenburg. Due to time constraints, only the state representative and judge executive races were invited to participate. The debate’s panelists were drawn from diverse segments of Meade County. Karen Kennedy (Messenger) and Dave Clark (WMMG) represented the media, Russ Powell (Chamber of Commerce) represented the business community, Earl Fitzgerald (Republican) and Ed Hardesty (Democrat) represented the local political parties. The debate format called for 15 questions of each race, with candidates rotating who received the question first. When asked a question by the panelist, Candidate A had 60 seconds to respond. Then, Candidate B had 90 seconds to respond and rebut, followed by Candidate A having 30 seconds for a final rebuttal. The process then repeated throughout the evening. At the end of the evening, all four candidates had time for a closing statement.

Ethanol – its economic impact on Meade County
On Oct. 27, a letter of intent was signed between the Meade County-Brandenburg Industrial Authority and AgriFuels, putting into motion a plan for AgriFuels to purchase 106 acres +/- of the 551-acre parcel adjacent to Arch Chemicals which was purchased late last year for the purpose of developing an industrial park. On this parcel will be built a 55-million gallon ethanol plant. Ethanol is a plant-based fuel that can be used as a substitute for gasoline in most instances. AgriFuels plans to use corn in its production of ethanol and is hoping to purchase as much of its supply from local farmers (within a 50-mile radius of the plant) as possible. But before the first bushel of corn is purchased and processed, the county will already begin reaping the rewards of this new venture.

Read all about it
Organizations are always looking for ways to measure their success in operations. One of the best methods to make those measurements is to look at usage statistics. How is the organization being used and how often? We recently received from our regional office a breakdown of library statistics over the past five years. The statistics show that the library has seen a huge increase in usage over that period. Most of the credit goes to our staff and to our board both who have worked extremely hard to make the library better each year. Two key reasons they have been successful is their love for the library and their belief in it as a valuable community institution. Another key reason the library has been successful is because of the people throughout this community who have supported us and helped spread the word about these valuable resources available to everyone in Meade County.
