Bobbing for – pecan pies?

Photos by Sandra Stone
On Oct. 26, members from the surrounding chambers of commerce and Fort Knox gathered at the farm of Ronnie and Barbara Proffitt, Vine Grove, for the annual community relations dinner hosted by the Radcliff Chamber of Commerce, Fort Knox Command, and, of course, the always gracious Proffitt family. In addition to delicious barbecue, announcements of upcoming events from the various chambers, and a mini concert by members of a men’s chorus from Elizabethtown, the true highlight of the event was bobbing for apples. This year was a little different. The prize for a successful apple bobber has always been a pecan pie made with love by Barbara Proffitt. In years past, she always took volunteers. This year, however, she began to draft folks, including Meade County’s own Doug Stone. Without getting his hair too mussed, he managed to snag an apple and a pie. Gene Smith former Mayor of West Point and stockholder of the Messenger also participated in the festivies. The chambers of commerce from Meade County, Elizabethtown, Vine Grove, West Point, Radcliff and Fort Knox work together to make the area more attractive to visitors, residents and businesses. With BRAC now in the works, that partnership is more vital than ever. For more information about the Meade County Area Chamber of Commerce, call (270) 422-3626.
