The Meade County Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting Nov. 14. Superintendent of schools Mitch Crump welcomed Bryan Honaker to the meeting. He is the newly elected board member who will take Jeff Greer’s place in January. “We look forward to working with you,” Crump told Honaker.

The board unanimously accepted the annual audit presented at a special working session earlier that evening on a motion by Belinda Cross, seconded by Eugene Sheeran.

Susan Fackler reviewed the financial summary for October 2006, noting total receipts of $1,836,177 and expenditures of $1,969,832. She stated this was comparable with the ending balance in October 2005. The food service fund showed an increase in expenses as equipment was paid for in October. The construction fund showed revenue from bond proceeds which will pay for the high school renovation.

A new assistant principal position has been posted at the high school to replace Bob Schrader who will take on the duties of coordinator for the Small Learning Centers Grant the high school recently received. The first year of the five-year grant will focus primarily on the freshman center slated to open with the start of the 2007-2008 school year.

The board reviewed the construction fund payments and change orders. One change order was for an emergency exit that had to be built for the band room during the renovation process at the high school. The other was for the addition of a gas commercial cook stove and exhaust system for the new family and consumer sciences lab which is part of the renovation. The addition of this equipment, said Rodney Pickering, will allow students to be certified in commercial cooking. The construction crew was preparing to dig footers at the high school and it was expected they would be poured in the very near future.

The slab and outside walls at the new primary school are 100 percent complete. Two rigs have been on site drilling 142 geothermal wells. They are now down to one rig drilling the last 20 wells. An eight-inch water main was installed. Work continues at a brisk pace, and Pickering stated he was very pleased with the general contractor’s work.

The board also reviewed the district’s nutrition and physical activity report. The report includes nutrient analysis and a breakdown by school of the types of physical activity offered. The board’s approval of this annual report will be sought in January.

Crump recommended the board’s acceptance of $53,000 of KETS matching fund assistance for technology, and the board approved his recommendation.

The board approved a trip of the MCHS cheerleaders to Nashville, Tenn. for the AmeriCheer Competition Jan. 5-7, 2007.
