Going into their fourth game of the season, the Lady Waves were able to come away with their first win against the visiting Lady Tigers of Breckinridge County on Dec. 8.

After a quick turnover by both teams, senior Jasmine Newby found junior Mindy Oliver for a basket, to give Meade the lead, which they never gave up.

With 3:17 left in the second quarter, the freshman trio of Mallory Wathen, Caroline Wilson and Bliss Powers put up eight consecutive points for the Lady Waves over the next 1:15 to give them a 30-11 lead after Breckinridge was held to 10 points in the first quarter.

With 51 seconds remaining until halftime, Breck finally got in their first field goal of the quarter, but with time running down, junior Melinda Hurt found junior Kayla Fackler open in the corner, who in return, sent it back to Hurt for one of her two three-pointers in the game with only three seconds remaining, giving the Waves a 33-13 halftime lead.

Newby and Oliver got the second half scoring off to a quick start with Newby scoring the first basket, then finding Oliver open for a jump shot, and Oliver stealing the inbounds and putting it back in, all in the first minute to go up 39-13.

With 5:11 remaining until the end of the quarter, the Lady Tigers found a wide open three-pointer on the wing and put it in, but on the ensuing possession, Newby hit a three-pointer of her own to extend the Lady Wave lead back to 44-16.

On the next two possessions for the Lady Waves, Fackler drove into the lane and passed it to senior Kayla Stull for the shot in the short corner, then Newby was fouled and went to the free-throw line and capitalized by making both and extending the lead to 48-16.

With 1:04 left in the third, Breck finally ended their scoring drought with two free throws and capping off the scoring for the quarter, 48-18.

In the fourth quarter, it was Newby and Oliver once again as Newby got a pass from junior Kim Montgomery in the middle of the lane and put it in the basket. After the next Breck possession Newby found Oliver open outside the perimeter for a three-pointer and to go up 57-20.

In the final two minutes, Meade scored four points while holding Breck to only four points in the quarter, and nine points for the half to pull away with a 61-22 win.

“The key to it (forcing 32 turnovers) was the kids just picked up the pace a little bit,” said head coach Josh Hurt. “We came out a little slow footed, once we stepped it up it was pretty much a landslide.”

“It feels good to get a win like this under our belt, especially a commanding win like this” said Stull. “It shows that we were actually here to play.”
