The Messenger is pleased to announce that education/sports coordinator Sandra Stone has been appointed to the Kentucky Press Association’s board of directors for 2007.

Stone, who has been a reporter for the Messenger since 1999, is one of four at-large members selected by incoming KPA board president Kriss Johnson. Johnson is employed as Newspaper in Education manager for the Lexington Herald-Leader.

According to Johnson, over the past five years KPA has placed an emphasis on involving young readers. “Sandra has done an admirable job in Newspaper in Education, and we wanted to get her involved in KPA,” said Johnson.

KPA has the second largest press association board in the country with 27 members, second only to California which has about 60 board members. The majority of KPA’s board members are elected into three-year terms, with the other four board seats filled at the pleasure of the board president. Chairmen of KPA’s divisions – News Editorial, Advertising, Circulation, New Media and Associates – serve two-year terms. The KPA board meets quarterly, at various locations throughout Kentucky.

The association’s primary goal is simple: to keep KPA one of the top press associations in the country. “When newspapers in other states look for services and programs for newspapers,” said Johnson, “Many point to the services offered by KPA. Goals are to maintain current services, develop new ones, maintain a strong bond of quality newspapers, and to do any and all things possible to promote newspapers.”

Stone is looking forward to serving on KPA’s board beginning January 2007. “I feel very honored to be able to take part in the statewide endeavor of ensuring and improving the quality of Kentucky’s newspapers, particularly community newspapers,” said Stone. “On the statewide level, people sometimes forget about the small community papers, and I want to remind them of the importance of those papers and be their voice.”

Said Messenger publisher Rena Singleton, “We’re very complimented that KPA chose a member of our staff to serve on its board. I think it speaks well for us as a newspaper and indicates that we have quality staff. It’s nice to see our talent recognized on a statewide level.”
