Ceremony begins service of elected officials

Upwards of about 250 members of our community, family members, and well-wishers croweded into the Meade County Courthouse Dec. 29 to ceremonially mark the results wrought by our last election. Circuit Court Judges Sam Monarch and Robert Miller administered the oath of office to new public officials from throughout Meade County. Circuit Court Judges Bruce Butler and Rober Miller took oaths administered by Monarch. Before doing so, Monarch briefly described the history and importance of oaths to the assemblage. Judge Executive Harry Craycroft (D) led a contingent of new faces populating county government. County Attorney Margaret Matney (R) and Sheriff Butch Kerrick (R) have never held elective office, while Jailer Troy Seelye (D) took his oath of office a second time in the wake of his reelection Nov. 7.

Kentucky enforces “primary” seat belt law in 2007

FRANKFORT – As of Jan. 1, law enforcement around the state will be handing out tickets rather than “courtesy warnings” to motorists caught not wearing their seat belts. On that date, the six-month grace period built into the “primary seat belt law” (KRS 189.125) ends and violators will be subject to a fine not to exceed $25. Previously, Kentucky’s seat belt law only allowed officers to cite for this violation if motorists were pulled over for another traffic violation. Law enforcement can now stop a vehicle solely for an occupant restraint violation.

Winter prompts increase in life-threatening risks; NFPA warns of carbon monoxide dangers and urges caution

Hundreds of people die from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning each year and it remains a serious threat no matter the season, but activities that typically increase with the onset of winter weather conditions pose an even greater risk. Recent tragic events throughout the country have served as sad reminders that carbon monoxide poisoning can result in death when it reaches unsafe levels. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) urges the public to be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide and to take measures to ensure safe practices.

Landowners can receive money for improving their property for wildlife

Frankfort – Money is available for landowners or managers who want to improve their property for wildlife. Funding comes through the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program, or WHIP, and applications are now being accepted. Improving the fields and forests for wildlife can be as simple as putting trees and shrubs in the ground, planting certain types of grasses, or fencing cattle away from creeks and thickets. The incentive program helps pay for these improvements.
