Maj. Michael Lewis Mundell, 47, was killed in Fallujah Jan. 5 in a roadside bombing. He was serving with the 108th Division, a training unit of 4,500 soldiers based in North Carolina.
Mundell, who went to high school in Pennsylvania, had served 11 years in the Army before rejoining in November 2005. He left for Iraq on Father’s Day 2006.
Mundell had been working with other soldiers looking for improvised explosive devices. Just a day after Thanksgiving, he was wounded when a sniper’s bullet pierced his radio and Kevlar vest. He was supposed to be on light duty, but refused less dangerous assignments.
Maj. Mundell’s body was to be returned to Brandenburg for burial. As of press time, arrangements had not yet been made.
Michael Mundell leaves behind his wife of 21 years, Audrey, and their four children, Erica, 17; Ryan, 14; Zachary, 13; and Dale, 11.
