Reservist from Brandenburg killed in Iraq

Maj. Michael Lewis Mundell, 47, was killed in Fallujah Jan. 5 in a roadside bombing. He was serving with the 108th Division, a training unit of 4,500 soldiers based in North Carolina.

Fiscal Court conducts public hearing on solid waste disposal

Meade County Judge Executive Harry Craycroft conducted his second special-called meeting Jan 3. The single-item agenda was to conduct a public hearing on the future of the 109 Board. Though several members of the 109 Board were present, none spoke publicly. Three members of the public expressed an opinion regarding the matter at hand.


2007 basketball homecoming

Hubert Curl and Katie Straney were crowned homecoming king and queen during the basketball homecoming game Jan. 5.


VFW’s national commander visits Brandenburg Post 11404

Gary Kurpius, national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, visited Post 11404, Brandenburg on Jan. 8 to kick off a five-day, 14-city tour of Kentucky. Accompanying him on his visit were Mike Penney, National Council of Administration; Jim Bates, senior vice commander, Carlos Pugh, junior vice commander and Jim MacDonald, state quartermaster adjutant and Brian Duffy.


The untold story of Sue Mundy’s capture: ‘Not a shot fired’

Marcellus Jerome Clark (alias Sue Mundy), Billy Magruder and Henry Medkiff were captured near the town of Webster, Meade County, in March 1865. The barn where they found lodging belonged to John and Elizabeth Cox, alleged distant kin of Magruder. They were hidden by Cox, and Magruder received medical aid for a bullet wound from Dr. Lewis.


Fiscal Court organizes, rehires personnel

Meade County Judge Executive Harry Craycroft conducted his first special called meeting Jan 2 to officially organize the county government, hire all employees, approve and authorize the updating of bonds and sureties, and update applicable signature cards. Generally, the county treasurer, the judge executive, and the payroll clerk require signature cards at the bank, as two of three must sign all checks for the county.


Riverport Authority holds first meeting of new year

The Meade County Riverport Authority met Jan. 2 for their first meeting of the new year. Greg Hager, Joe Wright, Clark Hardsaw, Edd Pike, authority chairman Don Bewley and David Pace, chairman of the Meade County/Brandenburg Industrial Development Authority, were present.


Kaitlyn Lusk coming home to sing

“When I found out I was going to be doing Louisville, I was really excited,” said Kaitlyn Lusk, who is touring as the female soloist in the Lord of the Rings Symphony, which she will perform with the Louisville Orchestra Jan. 19 and 20. “It’s my first time in Louisville, and I’m really excited.”


Sam Monarch accepts position of senior status judge

Sam H. Monarch has accepted the position as a senior status judge for Kentucky effective Jan. 1, 2007. Monarch who served as commonwealth’s attorney (1987-1991) and as circuit judge (1992-2006) retired Dec. 31, 2006, after 19 years of public service to the citizens of Breckinridge, Grayson and Meade counties.


Judge Bruce Butler attends conference for newly elected circuit judges
Orientation conference focused on preparing new court officials to take office

FRANKFORT – Circuit Judge Bruce T. Butler participated in the Newly Elected Officials Orientation Conference at the Embassy Suites in Lexington Dec. 11-15, 2006. Judge Butler will serve Breckinridge, Grayson and Meade counties. The Office for Judicial Branch Education of the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) presented the conference to facilitate the transition of the newly elected circuit and district judges and circuit court clerks as they prepare to take office Jan. 2.
