Margaret Huffines wins Meade County spelling bee

The 2007 Meade County spelling bee was held Feb. 8, sponsored by the Meade County Education Association and involving a total of 57 students from Battletown, David T. Wilson, Ekron, Flaherty, Muldraugh and Payneville elementary schools and Stuart Pepper Middle School.

Fiscal Court addresses solid waste

On the heels of the special called meeting of Meade County Fiscal Court Feb. 8, the Court held a working session to address solid waste issues. Solid waste coordinator Mark Gossett advised he had been working with entities in Frankfort to amend the current five-year plan to reflect changes in the governing body and updated rates. Gossett stated the meeting minutes and newspaper articles reflecting these changes were the only items needed to bring the county into compliance for the short term.


The functions of Meade County Planning and Zoning Commission and office

Barbara Campbell (left) is zoning administrator for Meade County’s planning and zoning office. Administrative assistant Diana Fackler (right) is relatively new to the department and is the first point of contact when one visits the office.


Riverport Authority will rethink stevedoring contract

Returning from nearly an hour in executive session, the Meade County Riverport Authority returned to open session Feb. 2 with a recommendation to update the stevedoring contract with Consolidated Grain & Barge.


Once again thank the American farmer for low cost food

On Feb. 9, during Food Check-Out Week, members of the Meade County FFA chapter helped bag groceries at Kroger and handed out information about Food Check-Out Week in America.

 


Meade County’s Farm Service Agency supports our farm community

The Farm Service Agency (FSA) administers and manages farm commodity, credit, conservation, disaster, and loan programs prescribed by Congress through a network of federal, state, and county offices.


Magistrates appointed to local committees

During a special called meeting of Meade County Fiscal Court Feb. 8, magistrates were appointed to various committees.


The heart of a lion

To most, Feb. 14 means a day of love, hearts, flowers, candy or perhaps even a romantic dinner for two. However, for families affected by congenital heart defects (CHD), Valentine’s Day has a much deeper meaning. It is a day of awareness, a day that will hopefully bring awareness to the number one birth defect. It’s the number one birth defect, but it is a problem that is not mentioned nor researched nearly enough.
