Gun found at middle school; two juveniles charged

On April 11, a 14-year-old student brought an unloaded gun to Stuart Pepper Middle School. Evidently, he had found the gun and intended to show it to another student, a 15-year-old male. A staff member monitoring the hallway was aware of the students’ activities and reported it immediately. The authorities were called, and Meade County Sheriff Butch Kerrick and School Resource Officer Mike Cummings were on the scene within minutes. The gun and the students involved were removed from school property, and neither student will be attending Stuart Pepper Middle School while the investigation continues.

Ordnance Airman awarded Bronze Star for Iraq duty

HICKAM AIR FORCE BASE, Hawaii – A “six-month adrenaline rush.”

That’s how Master Sgt. Al Schneider described his deployment to Iraq.

Assigned to Headquarters Pacific Air Forces Civil Engineer Directorate as the command explosive ordnance disposal superintendent, the Louisville native left here last May for combat-skills training and set his boots on the ground in Iraq early in August.


Fiscal Court conducts monthly meeting

Meade County Judge Executive Harry Craycroft convened a regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Meade County Fiscal Court April 10 with a full court and relatively light agenda.

Four Oaks residents crowd into council meeting

Mayor David Pace convened the regular monthly business meeting of the Brandenburg City Council with a full agenda and a full house on April 9. All members of the council were present as Pace welcomed guests. The council approved past minutes, and the treasurer’s report. The council later authorized the second reading of Ordinance 458 authorizing annexation of developing property east of Broadway, behind L&L Body Shop.

Board of Education hears concern about food service policy, approves Title IX verification

Louie LaTondress addressed the April 10 meeting of the Meade County Board of Education with a concern about the alternative lunch served to children whose parents won’t pay for their children’s lunches. “I think we’re punishing the wrong people,” said LaTondress. “It breaks my heart to think that because a parent won’t pay for their child’s lunch they have to get a different lunch.” He asked the board to consider other options in dealing with a situation over which a child has no control.

Board of Elections prepares for May 22 primary

The Meade County Board of Elections met April 9 with members Katrina Fitzgerald, Rosemarie Folden and Faye Miller present. Miller was sworn in as the new Republican board member following the resignation of Bruce Williams. Sheriff Butch Kerrick was unable to attend.

Courthouse evacuated due to suspected gas leak

Around 1 p.m. on April 11, the Meade County Courthouse was evacuated in response to a suspected natural gas leak. The smell of gas was reported in and near the lobby of the Meade County Courthouse, and it was subsequently cleared. “We’re clearing the courthouse for safety’s sake,” said Judge Executive Harry Craycroft as he directed citizens out the doors and away from the building. “We’d rather be safe than go up in smoke.”

Brandenburg Ethics Commission reviews council profiles

The Brandenburg Ethics Commission met April 12 to review profiles of the Brandenburg City Council members. Submitted each time there are new council members, these profiles outline the member’s occupation, salary and any potential for conflicts of interest in the conduct of city business. After reviewing the profiles, the commission members stated they saw nothing that required discussion.

Ethics Commission acts to clarify complaint

The Meade County Ethics Commission gathered for a regular meeting April 10 to accept financial disclosure forms and continue consideration of an ethics complaint. The Commission had tried to meet twice previous to April 10, cancelling both of those meetings, once due to a last-minute family emergency, another time due to lack of a quorum.
