“Sometimes it’s easy to overlook someone because you are used to them being around,” said Meade County Fair Board manager David Pace in preparing to announce the recipient of the 2007 Fair Person of the Year Award. The person in question, Pace said, helps set up, tear down, provides equipment and has branched out to help with other events as well.

It was still a mystery to Bruce Caster, the 2007 Fair Person of the Year, until Pace mentioned a golf cart and Kevin Hubbard.

“I wasn’t even thinking about him calling my name until he started talking about riding around on the golf cart with Kevin Hubbard,” said Caster. “We’d always kid about patrolling the area, out seeing the sights,” said Caster. “If anyone was in need, we helped them out.”

Caster and Hubbard, who died Jan. 1, 2006, worked together on the garden tractor pull and other fair events and had many good times at the fair. “There was never a dull moment with Kevin,” said Caster. “He always kept you laughing.”

Caster lives in Flaherty with his wife, Jerri. They have three sons, BJ and his fiancee, Lauren Smith, Brandon and Bradley, his fiancee, Kristie Allen, and their daughter, Braelyn Jo Caster. He is the owner/operator of Mow’n & More through which he supplies such services as mowing grass and plowing snow. “You can guess what I’ve been busy doing lately,” he said with a laugh, alluding to the 12 inches of snow that fell on Meade County the previous weekend.

His own equipment, plus whatever else he can line up, comes in handy during fair week. He drags cars out for the demolition derby, grades or mows the track for the garden tractor pull and provides support for the truck and tractor pull, everything from grading the track to helping park vehicles in the pullers’ area.

“It’s a fun time,” said Caster of his 10-plus years with the Meade County Fair. “I just come to help out, do my fair share.”
