Breakfast of champions

On the morning of July 24, the Meade County Farm Bureau held a breakfast at the Farm Bureau Community Building to enlighten the community about how little of the retail food dollar goes to farmers.

A visit to the Meade County Fair

During a recent telephone conversation, author Leigh Anne Florence mentioned she needed to attend a county fair to shoot some carnival footage for an upcoming teacher presentation. Florence is the author of several books about Woody the Kentucky Wiener and the serial stories which appear in Kentucky newspapers as part of a statewide readership project sponsored by the Kentucky Press Association and KU/LG&E.

Sue Silvano, Ron and Leigh Anne Florence and their niece, Macy, visited the Meade County Fair to shoot footage for a teacher presentation tied to Leigh Anne Florence’s latest serial story, “Heads and Tails,” which will appear in the Messenger beginning Sept. 10.

Honor Flight benefit dance to be held at VFW Post 11404

On May 29, 2004, President George Bush dedicated the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., to honor those who fought and died in service to the United States and waited 60 years for a monument. Many never lived to see it, and those alive today may not live to see it as approximately 1,500 World War II veterans die each day.

Honor Flight provides a way for World War II veterans to travel to Washington, D.C., for the experience of a lifetime – the opportunity to bear witness to a memorial dedicated to them and the sacrifices they made.

The incredible shrinking Flint Island

On May 15, I received a call from Anna Popham, who told me her husband, Jimmy, had collected some bones a vandalizing relic hunter left on top of the ground. The looter had excavated a hole – about 20 inches in diameter and about 18 inches deep – and apparently left in haste for a half-full soda bottle was recovered at the site. The bones and soda bottle were collected as criminal evidence.
