Irena Pipes celebrates 100 years

Irena Pipes, formerly of Battletown, celebrated her 100th birthday Aug. 16 at Beehive Assisted Living with a host of family and friends present. She was born Aug. 17, 1908, the daughter of the late Frank and Effie Haynes-Bennett.

Kyle Raymer wins Junior World Championship

“Ever since I started fishing the junior circuit at age 14, my goal has been to win the title of Junior World Champion.” With these words Kyle Raymer reflected on his winning the senior division (ages 15-18) of the National Guard Junior World Championships held Aug. 15-16 at Lake Monticello, S.C.

Two local men arrested in major county meth drug bust

A major methamphetamine drug bust the week of Aug. 5 has “put a dent” into the drug entering Meade County, Sheriff William “Butch” Kerrick said.

The bust came about while the county’s undercover drug detective was investigating suspected meth usage at a county residence, Kerrick said.

The investigation eventually resulted in arrests of two county residents.

Fiscal Court voices concern on judge’s recommendations

Local business owner Harry Lee Lusk is still a member of the Brandenburg/Meade County Industrial Development Authority, but his days might be numbered.

Meade County Judge Executive Harry Craycroft didn’t recommend Lusk for reappointment at the Court’s Aug. 12 meeting, but his (Craycroft’s) nomination was thwarted in a 4-3 vote.

Planning and Zoning Commission to debate quarry rezoning Aug. 21

The Meade County Planning and Zoning Commission is expected to discuss the rezoning of 475 acres near Battletown for a quarry at 2595 Big Bend Road Aug. 21.

The session, which is open to the public, starts at 7 p.m. in the courtroom of the Meade County Courthouse.

The applicant, Meade County Quarry LLC, proposes to conduct surface rock quarry mining and install barge loading and terminal operations along the Ohio River.
