Area re-enactor brings Civil War lore
to life for local Archaeology Society

His name was Stephen Burbridge and he was hated.

Despite the fact that Union Gen. Burbridge was praised by fellow officers at the battles of Arkansas Post and Vicksburg, he barely managed to escape his home state following the close of the war.

Author and Civil War re-enactor Bryan S. Bush offered this information to members of the Meade County Archaeological Society on Burbridge during their Oct. 6 meeting.

Clock is ticking for taxpayers to receive stimulus payments

About 241 Meade County residents won’t benefit from the federal government’s attempt to boost the flagging economy if they don’t file a 2007 income tax return by midnight Oct. 15.

These filers are those who normally would not file an income tax return, according to Internal Revenue Service spokesperson Jodie Reynolds. However, due to the passage of the economic stimulus act earlier this year, they are required to file the return to receive the funds.

The payments total $300 for single residents and $600 for married couples, according to the IRS.

Lawyer to review Riverport lease, cost not to exceed $4,000

An undisclosed lawyer, who specializes in real estate and stevedore issues, will review the Riverport’s lease agreement.

Riverport consultant Mike Flint recommended the action during the Authority’s Oct. 7 meeting. He added he didn’t think the review cost would exceed $4,000.

With Vice Chairman Jay Larry Thomas and member Greg Hager, the recommendation was unanimously approved.

Federal officials grant Meade County another disaster declaration

For the second time this year, Meade County has received a federal disaster declaration from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency.

However, County Emergency Management Director Ron Dodson said the declaration is only to assist businesses and governments, and not individuals affected by the Sept. 14 severe windstorm.

President George Bush announced late last week federal disaster aid was made available to Kentucky to supplement local recovery efforts in the area.
