Scouting for Food

November is busy as residents prepare for the Thanksgiving holidays and the visit of family and friends. Several Cub Scouts and adult volunteers, including Pack 150 of Brandenburg and Pack 66, sponsored by Salem Baptist Church, participated in the annual “Scouting for Food” drive.

Governor appoints Streible as new commonwealth attorney

Susan Streible has a new title but she’s doing the same job.

Streible was appointed by Gov. Steve Beshear to the position of commonwealth attorney, representing Meade, Breckinridge and Grayson counties, effective Nov. 19.

“I was appointed by the governor to succeed Kenton (Smith),” she said. “I was sworn in Nov. 20 by Judge Bruce Butler here in Meade County and my appointment will be effective untl the next election.”

County officials hear glum state forecast

LEXINGTON – State leaders speaking before the Kentucky Association of Counties 34th annual conference and exposition had their script together.

The Kentucky Association of Counties is a statewide association, offering lobbying services, insurance and other forms of support to county governments. It is headquartered in Frankfort.

And none of the future financial forecasts were rosy. The key word – and one they all used – was dire.

Despite low turnout, optimism still exists for west county water project

“We were a bit disappointed in the turnout, but this might be the time of year when people had other reasons for not attending,” Meade County Water District General Manager Joe Bartley said.

Bartley was referencing a dismal turnout at the district’s session in Rhodelia where the proposed west county water project was presented.

The project started out on a rocky road when Breckinridge County officials objected to running the line in their county. The issue was resolved when they agreed to allow the line to be run through their county, but Meade officials were unable to seek tap-ins from those residents.

County approves truck lease

A unanimous vote during a special-called Meade County Fiscal Court meeting Nov. 17 cleared the way for County Solid Waste/Recycling Coordinator Mark Gossett to get a new roll-off truck.

The truck will replace a model which currently needs about $3,000 worth of repairs, Gossett said.

The truck’s total price wasn’t disclosed during the session.

Gossett said the cost is less than to purchase a new vehicle and said the department still has an 8-year-old vehicle they could use as needed.
