Otter Creek Park closure spurs protests and renewed interest

A protest attended by about 300 area residents and renewed interest in taking over Otter Creek Park from the State Department of Fish and Wildlife marked a tumultous week for the 2,600-acre wilderness near Muldraugh.

State officials are in the process of setting up a meeting with city of Louisville officials to discuss the park’s possible purchase, but representatives stress the only thing that is happening are discussions.

Meade County earns awards at state Farm Bureau meeting

LOUISVILLE – Meade County farmers acquired some well-deserved recognition at the state Farm Bureau meeting Dec. 4.

Outgoing Kentucky Farm Bureau President Marshall Coyle awarded Meade County Farm Bureau members a County Activity of Excellence Award for their “Breakfast with a Farmer” program thispast July at the Meade County Fair. Coyle said the popular event allowed participants to pay a reduced food cost and later learned the farmers would only get 22 cents of the profit.

Scam artist targets resident, but alertness pays numerous dividends

A local resident got an early Christmas present, but he was alert enough to not place it under the tree gift wrapped.

The resident received a letter from Amica North America Services Inc. advising him he “was one of the lucky winners in the second category of the Publisher’s Clearing House and a compensation draw sweepstakes also known as the North American Direct Sweepstakes held March 4, 2008.”

“These types of things happen all of the time,” said Reanna Smith-Hamblin, Better Business Bureau communications director. “Someone is definitely getting rich, but it’s not the consumer.”
