OPINION

To the Messenger:

Hey Washington.

How about this idea? Take that $700 billion in bailout money and give it back to the people you got it from (the taxpayers) and let them catch up their mortgage payments, buy new cars, appliances, food and clothes.

And I’m not talking about a measley $600. I mean all they paid in 2008.

Oh, and give it a catchy name like bailout via proxy.

As a lifelong resident, I am very proud to call Flaherty my home. My parents have lived in the same home in Flaherty for nearly 40 years. They have always had great neighbors and have never had any problems with any of those neighbors, until now.

Owners of a local business in Flaherty decided they needed to add public restrooms and an expanded kitchen in their establishment. In order to make these additions, they had to update their sewage system. The solution was to add an extremely large sewer lagoon in the vacant lot next to my parents’ home. The sewage sits on top of the ground so you can imagine not only what this looks like, but also and most importantly, what horrible stench comes from the “pond.” The value of my parents’ home dropped drastically overnight.

GUIDELINES FOR LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Mail Letters to the Editor to P.O. Box 678, Brandenburg, Ky 40108; FAX to (270) 422-2110; E-mail to messenger@bbtel.com; hand deliver to 138 Broadway, Suite A, Brandenburg; or use the drop box by the front door after business hours.

Letters should be 300 words or less and concern an issue of public interest. Longer letters MAY be run at the discretion of the editorial staff or may be edited to fit.

They must be typed or printed legibly. The Messenger limits the frequency of Letters to the Editor to one per person within a 30-day period.

Letters may not contain slanderous remarks and all letters are printed at the discretion of the editor.

The writer's name, address and telephone number must be included.
We will, however, withhold the writer's name on request. A file of all letters to the editor will be kept for public inspection at the Messenger.

Submit words of thanks as paid advertisements.
