Star athlete’s tragic death brings community together

Meade County High School senior Chelsea Stinnett, a star athlete and all-around student, died Dec. 11 of injuries in an auto accident.

The first unit to respond to the scene from Meade County EMS contained her mother, Dawn Wise. The other paramedic was Matt Hall.

Stinnett served as captain of the volleyball and basketball teams. She also was a coach in the Lady Wave youth basketball program.

Local children ‘Shop With Cops’

The annual Shop With Cops took place Dec. 13, with 38 children participating. Shop With Cops is sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) whose members raise money from roadblocks, local businesses, and individuals in order to provide Christmas to local kids. This year, almost $6,800 was raised.

“Without these contributions, Shop With Cops would not be possible,” said FOP Vice President Bill Basham.

County audit uncovers state KRS violation

The 2007 Meade County Fiscal Court audit has uncovered some payments made in violation of KRS 61.210.

But Fiscal Court members were told since this action was done unconsciously and as long as it wasn’t done again “it would all be fine,” county treasurer Shirley Fackler said.

Magistrate Herbie Chism sought the explanation, after reading in the notes the KRS violation. He wanted to know what would happen.

Proposed zoning regulation text amendment withdrawn; process to be redone

A proposed amendment to the Meade County Zoning Regulations regarding the use of explosives in agricultural areas by non-farming activities met with deferral during the Dec. 9 Meade County Fiscal Court meeting.

County Planning and Zoning Administrator Charles (Tony) Coletta withdrew the proposal following comments from Louisville attorney Michael Tigue, representing the Meade County Quarry.

Coletta said the revised public notices would be posted in plenty of time and the matter might undergo two hearings – one at Fiscal Court and the second at the planning commission – before the matter returns to the Court.
