Following two public hearings during which Meade County Planning and Zoning commissioners and members of Meade County Fiscal Court heard comments both for and against Resolution IX, the commission voted to approve the resolution and send it to Fiscal Court. The resolution involves implementing a text amendment to the Meade County Planning and Zoning Ordinance as it pertains to the use of explosives within agricultural zones and the residential use of agricultural land within Meade County.
During the Feb. 10 Fiscal Court meeting, there wasn’t a report from the Planning and Zoning Commission.
County Judge Executive Harry Craycroft said director Charles “Tony” Coletta had nothing ro report this month.
However, the resolution is not dead, Coletta said later.
“It is very much alive,” he said. “We have the resolution and we just have not finished with the final administrative review of it. We are just being prudent that is all.”
“The resolution is very much alive,” Coletta stressed. “The resolution was adopted by the Planning and Zoning Board and it is in the hands of the county attorney right now.”
Coletta said the resolution was not about “a quarry,” but rather protection for the county’s future agricultural land.
Supporters of at least one quarry have said the facility, presently in operation, can only be used for quarrying, as it would be unsuitable for agricultural operations. One resident said the only animal suitable for the land would be goats.
“The resolution is still very much alive and I expect at the next Fiscal Court meeting it will be on their table,” Coletta said.
He said he wanted the resolution to go through a final review as he didn’t want to present an incomplete product to the Fiscal Court.
The court’s next meeting is March 10 at 7 p.m. in the Meade County Courthouse.
Three magistrates – Tom Goddard, Randall Hardesty and Steve Wardrip – were in attendance.
