OPINION

To the Messenger:

I would like to express my appreciation to all the hard-working and dedicated men and women of our utility offices and road crews and the many other community volunteers who spent endless hours without sleep or rest to get us back to where we are today. The conditions you had to work in were unbelievable and extremely dangerous. My appreciation is also extended to your families who were left at home struggling to stay warm like the rest of us while you were away for so many days and nights.

To the Messenger:

After reading the letter someone wrote that was published 1-28-09, I feel I can no longer keep my mouth shut. I do not know Rod Blagojevich, but I do know who the Wardrips are. I have worked with Steve’s dad. I will say Steve is a fine upright citizen of Meade County. He will go out of his way to help people in need. Even though Steve is and was an elected magistrate, he did no wrong.

To the citizens of Meade County from the Fraternal Order of Police and Fraternal Order of Police Associate Lodge #67:

It is with deep regret that due to recent events the FOP and FOPA will no longer be associated with the Christmas Angel Tree Program. In 2002, the FOPA was asked by Community Action to take on this project. We were advised Community Action would continue to supply us with names of children based on their economic guidelines. We established our own guidelines to make sure each child had the best Christmas possible. Although we never set limits on what a person spent on the child, we tried to make sure each child received something equal to what other children in the same family received. We may have had to add several dollars worth of gifts to their bags and sometimes we had to take Angels left on the Angel Tree and the FOPA would go shopping for them so no child on our list was left without. We also tried to make sure that no child in a family was turned away due to age.
