35 years later Tornado memories still quite vivid in Brandenburg

It was hot and muggy at 3:45 p.m., April 3, 1974.

School children were riding the busses home and everyone was preparing for an afternoon of chores.

Then it struck.

An F5 tornado arrived, traveling down Hwy. 79, and continuing along to the foot of the Ohio River, leaving behind a swath of destruction.

Meade County Emergency Management Director Ron Dodson said a great deal was learned about tornadoes and severe weather through the efforts of scientists who studied the outbreak.

Chamber marks past, present and future March 26

“You also think of the leadership for Meade County,” he said. “And the collaboration they have with government, schools, businesses and other organizations in Meade County.”

Local business people share views on Meade County’s economy

Local auctioneer and real estate agent Stephen Barr, thought the Meade County market was rather insulated due to its location.

“There are things which go on in New York, California and Florida, but it usually takes a while before it gets to us,” Barr said. He added Meade County has yet to get the fallout from these areas.

People are still eating out, Home Plate Restaurant manager Kathy Simmons said, but they’re eating more at dinner than lunch.
