It’s finally spring!

Signs of spring are around the area, even if the temperatures don’t always feel like it. Bill Pack, Old Weldon, brought in these double daffodils to brighten the Messenger office. His grandfather planted them on his farm, which Pack still owns, in the late 1800’s. He said while they were quite abundant at that time, you don’t see many today.

County native assumes role as Meade County PVA

A 30-year veteran of the Meade County Public Schools has started a new chapter in her life.

“I’m a Meade County native and I married a Meade County native,” newly-appointed Property Valuation Administrator Rebecca Richardson said.

“And now I am in the Meade County Courthouse where my father (Jimmy Watts) worked. He was the county attorney for a long time – 36 years.”

“My dad – in fact my whole family – got into politics and the whole family likes it,” she said. “As a matter-of-fact this is going to be the first political office that I’m going to have to run for next year.”

Area police agencies eye some federal stimulus funding

Two area police departments are angling for some federal stimulus funding, which, if awarded would beef them up.

Muldraugh Police Chief John Stinebruner and Brandenburg Police Chief Jeff Cox each submitted funding applications.

Nate Hodson, a spokesperson for Rep. Brett Guthrie, explained the program was part of the COPS program which dated back to former President Bill Clinton.

“It was part of the Community Oriented Policing Services program,” Hodson explained. He said this program differed in the fact 100 percent of the salary and benefits are covered, whereby under the previous program, 75 percent was covered.

State auditor gives 2008 Meade County audit ‘clean bill of health’

Meade County’s 2008 audit was found not to have any reportable issues, state Auditor Crit LuAllen reported.

The audit, accepted at the April 14 Fiscal Court meeting, is for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008.

“There is nothing out of compliance or negative about the audit,” County Judge Executive Harry Craycroft said.
