Meade archaeologists unearth Native American artifacts as part of area site visit

A Native American rock shelter about 12 miles from Payneville, revealed a number of “finds” for about 16 members of the Meade County Archaeological Society April 26. In addition to flint, a pottery piece with an Adena pattern, a button and two “hominy” holes were located.

Flu virus hits in the local area, officials urge vigilance

H1N1, otherwise known as the “swine flu,” has been diagnosed in Kentucky, and area health officials are urging residents to heed warnings and practice vigilance.

Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by Type A influenza viruses. People don’t normally contract the disease, but human infections can – and do – happen.

According to media reports, this outbreak originated in Mexico and the United States. In the United States, outbreaks were first reported in California and Texas. Both the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization and state and local health organizations are collaborating to investigate this situation.

Check scam resurfaces, however, alert resident doesn’t take the proverbial bait

Despite her husband’s pleas to shred the letter which arrived in Battletown resident Dottie Brewer’s mailbox April 19, she didn’t do so.

She took the matter one step further, alerting the Meade County Sheriff’s Department, the Battletown Post Office and local media.

Fire district closes in on new two-year operating budgets

Finishing touches are being placed on the new two-year budgets for the Meade County Fire Protection District, following finalization at the board’s April 20 meeting.

Board members agreed to set aside $32,000 for expansion of Station 2, which serves the Doe Valley/Rock Haven areas, according to MCFPD Chairman Martin Bosemer.
