Cancer survivors celebrate life

The Cancer Survivor Celebration took place June 28, in the Great Hall at My Old Kentucky Home State Park. Cancer patients, survivors, their families, friends, and health care professionals gathered to demonstrate that vibrant life after a cancer diagnosis can be a reality.

A special photo exhibit, “The Faces of Cancer,” was unveiled featuring approximately 15 survivors of various kinds of cancer from Meade, Hardin, Nelson, Breckinridge, LaRue, Marion, Washington, and Grayson counties.

Fourth marked in style at Fort Knox salute to the nation

Americans, soldiers and others paused July 4th to help Fort Knox and others celebrate the nation’s 233rd birthday.

“Many of you are familiar with the history (of July Fourth),” United States Army Armor Center Commander Col. David Teeples said.

“We look back to that day in 1776 when the Continental Congress met and decided to sever our ties with Britain. The mood at the time was tense and Britain had placed many laws and taxes on us.”

Irvington breaks ground on future park

Irvington residents attended a ground-breaking ceremony July 5, for the future Vance Simmons Community Park. The 23 and 1/2 –acre site was purchased by Irvington Youth Sports from Vance and Mary Simmons, Shelbyville, at a reduced price. The land has been in the Simmons family for 80 years.

“This is the only way we would sell,” said Vance Simmons. “We didn’t want someone to come along and tract it out. This is for a good cause.”

Select fairgoers to determine verdict in July 22 mock trial

With the rap of a gavel, a judge will close a first-ever Meade County Fair event – a mock trial July 22, in the Farm Bureau Community Building.

“We’re going to be creating a case,” Meade County Attorney Margaret Matney said.
Fairgoers need not be worried as Matney said the case would not replicate any past cases in Meade County District Court.

“We’re also going to have a real judge,” she continued, adding three or four people have already volunteered to participate in the event, set for 5 p.m.
