P&Z Commission holds hearing
on quarry rezoning

Messenger Staff

A large crowd converged on the Meade County Courthouse Aug. 20, for the special-called meeting of the Meade County Planning and Zoning Commission.

On the agenda was the rezoning from A-2/agricultural to HI/heavy industrial) for the property of James Collins. The property is approximately 495 acres and is located on Big Bend Road in Battletown. It has been the center of controversy for several months. Numerous citizens of Meade County – mainly from the Big Bend area – attended the meeting to voice their opinions about the issue.

Conservation officers rescue three from Ohio River after boat capsizes

A veteran Kentucky Fish and Wildlife conservation officer and another in his first week on the job, pulled three men from the Ohio River whose small boat had capsized and sunk around 6 p.m. Aug. 30.

Officer Rick Mehlbauer and new officer, Rodney Milburn, rescued James Haggard, 36, and David Hockday, 33, both of Brandenburg, and Chris Dages, 47, Vine Grove, from the river at mid-channel several hundred yards west of the Brandenburg boat ramp in Meade County. Haggard was transported to Hardin County Memorial Hospital.

Local schools prepare for upsurge

Students at Ekron Elementary are “sitting pretty” after renovations were completed in time for the new school year, but those in the Flaherty area will have to wait until the fall of 2010 before their renovation is complete.

Meade County Public Schools Director of Buildings and Grounds Rodney Pickering, said eight additional classrooms opened in time for the start of school earlier this year, along with improved office access, an enlarged parent drop-off area and an increased heating and serving line. The work was completed through a $5,795,000 bond issue, he said.
