Morgan's Raid

We are sad to report on Saturday last this year of our Lord 1863, terrorist John Morgan brought his hellish raiders to our fare city Brandenburg, seizing the steamer John B. McComb and the Alice Dean. Crossing the Ohio, he then captured our sister city of Corydon taking 1,200 hostage. A shell from the gunboats went through Judge Perciful’s kitchen, hit a table at the old jail, and another hit the Hotel Meade and a tree on Main Street. Yet another hit a conferate and killed three horses. We estmate fifty shells all told hit Brandenburg, yet no one was killed by his grace. We soon resumed our festive celebrations, though, delighting in a dance and the traveling merchants camping here along with other great fun hosted by The Meade County Civil War Heritage Association.

Firecracker of a Fourth at the fort

It was time for pageantry and music at Keyes Park as soldiers and civilians celebrated the nation’s 234th birthday at Keyes Park on Fort Knox. Above, the salute to the colors featured the 50 state flags plus those from the U.S. territories, and in Kentucky’s case, the playing of “My Old Kentucky Home.” Before the salute, members of the post’s 113th Army band, the “Dragoons,” performed military music, Dixieland and rock tunes. Left, members of the Cato Watts Band performed a variety of pop music from the 1950s to current day. A fireworks display capped the event, courtesy of Fort Knox’s Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation directorate.
