How many beans in these pods?

Tom Tucker, Brandenburg, walked into the Messenger office July 19, with a handful of beans. But these weren’t just ordinary beans – they were all approximately 24 inches long! “It just took a lot of tender loving care,” Tucker said. “I still have a bunch at home that are this long.” The longest bean was 30 inches long. Mrs. Tucker planned on making a meal of them that evening!


KSP Citizens Police Academy seeks applicants

The Kentucky State Police Post in Elizabethtown is accepting applications for the 2010 KSP Citizens Police Academy. The 10-week academy begins Sept. 7 and concludes Nov. 9. Graduation is Nov. 16. Students meet Tuesdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m., where they will learn about the many facets of the KSP including patrol, criminal investigations and drug investigations. Students will also take part in simulated traffic stops and evidence collection. Applications can be obtained at the Kentucky State Police Post 4, by calling (270) 766-5078 or visiting http://www.kentuckystatepolice.org/posts/post4.htm. Anyone 18 years of age living within the Post 4 district is welcome to apply. There is no cost and all applicants are subject to a background check. Deadline is Aug. 23.

Fire district handles flurry of business

Work is progressing on an update for the Meade County Fire Protection District’s proposal to the Insurance Service Office (ISO) for a review of their insurance rates.

Vine Grove chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, members mark centennial

The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world to which both women and men may belong. Men that have become Master Masons and women with a Masonic affiliation may petition to join.

Meade County High School Band prepping for fall season


The 2010 edition of the Meade County Greenwave Band will perform their show titled, “The Night” at competitions throughout the region this fall. “The Night” is based on music from, “The Night on Bald Mountain” by Modest Mussorsky, which is most recognizable from its use in the Disney classic, “Fantasia.” The band this year consists of 34 woodwinds, 34 brass, 28 percussion, 11 guards, and three field commanders, for a total of 110 members. The band is under the direction of Chris McGee and Matt Williams. Competitions of note the band will be attending: Aug. 28 –Muhlenberg Classic; Sept. 11- Caverna; Sept. 18- Eastern Classic; Sept. 25- BOA Louisville; Oct. 2- South Oldham; Sept. 16- Grayson County; Sept. 23- KMEA regionals; Sept. 30- KMEA Semi Finals; and Nov. 13- BOA Grand Nationals, Indianapolis.
