OPINION

Letter to the Editor

To the Messenger:

I appreciate Larry See’s report on my retirement from the Meade County Water District, as well as the pictures. I also appreciate Mildred Griffee’s letter to the editor. Mildred and her late husband, Ray, were among the six people who got the district underway. As I recall they even did the meter reading at one time. The wives should certainly get as much credit as their husbands for the part they took in this venture.
I was appointed to replace Ray when he retired. So, as Mildred pointed out, I was not one of the original board members. Also, Larry, I lived in the log cabin at Battletown by myself – except for a cat and the mice in the attic. It was towards the end of that year that I was fortunate enough to meet Rosina and we were married the following November while I was in the Army and we moved to Alexandria, Va., when I was stationed at Fort Belvoir, Va. When we returned to Meade County, we lived in a small house at Gaswell Hollow. It had no inside plumbing, and the roots that grew through the clay wall of the cistern made even the water supply uncertain. Moving to a new house with inside plumbing and a concrete block cistern was a step in the right direction, but many years went by before we had county water when the MCWD line was built through Milan Road.
There were a few points that were not quite correct in both cases. Shortly after my appointment, I was offered a position in a British school, and my wife and I had the opportunity to live in England for a year. Patsy Thompson was appointed in my place, continuing having a representative from the western part of the county. Shortly after we returned from England (where we were told that everyone in England had a connection to the public water system, even though the line to our flat was so old the pressure was very low), a commissioner resigned, and I agreed to return on a temporary basis, which turned into these many years! Without taking time to check the records, I was a commissioner for some 18 years.
Early on, we were proud of the milestone reached when we had 3,000 hook-ups and now we have passed the 4,000 mark. With additional public funds, the district should continue to grow even more rapidly.

To the Messenger:

This is just a note to say I do enjoy getting the Messenger as I spent 85 years in Meade County and I will always be interested in the “goings on there.” I enjoyed Larry See’s write up on Mr. Jon Whitfield.
