Veterans welcomed home
–over 35 years later

Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam –places where few people wanted to spend their time, but did so.
The veterans who served in these unfamiliar lands with unique sounding names, were given a hero’s welcome – nearly 35 years later – at Fort Knox Aug. 26.

Library board
increases tax rate to 9.8 percent

Based on the recommendation of board chairman Sandra Stone, on Aug. 23, the Meade County Public Library unanimously approved taking the compensating rate for the upcoming tax year.

Rachel's Challenge

On April 20, 1999, seniors Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold entered Columbine High School in Columbine, Colo., armed with firearms and homemade explosives. The pair strolled casually through the school and embarked in a shooting spree that lasted 45 minutes. When it was over, 12 students and one teacher were killed and 23 others were wounded. Harris and Klebold ended the rampage by committing suicide.

For the second month in a row, area residents pressed for water service in various locations of Meade County.

River Heritage
Festival 5K run/walk scheduled for Sept. 25

Are you a runner or just like to walk for exercise? Then join us for the annual River Heritage Festival 5K run/walk on Sept. 25, at Buttermilk Falls in Brandenburg. The race starts at 9 a.m., with registration from 8:15-8:45 a.m. The cost is $10 per person, and if you register by Sept. 7, you will receive a FREE T-shirt! Cash prizes and medals will be awarded for the best times in Youth, Male Adult, and Female Adult divisions. Race applications can be picked up at the Meade County Health Department or the Cooperative Extension office. You can also receive an electronic copy by e-mailing Melissa Phillips at melissad.phillips@ky.gov. The 5K is the kick-off event for the festival and is sponsored by the Meade County Wellness Taskforce.


 

Court denies Emmer Drive acceptance again

A special meeting of the Meade County Fiscal Court Aug. 24, placed Emmer Drive as a subject of contention once again.

Library’s bid bonds net low interest rate

Morgan Keegan, whose parent company is Regions Financial Corporation, was awarded the bid for bonds for the new Meade County Public Library.

State funding awarded to area infrastructure projects
